Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My passion for helping others and ensuring they have accurate and up-to-date information has been a constant throughout my career. Even before becoming a nurse more than a decade ago, I found joy in sharing valuable insights with anyone who could benefit. This commitment intensified when I worked in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), commonly known as a "nursing home." I observed numerous patients missing out on eligible benefits, especially Hospice care at the end of life. The lack of awareness, both among patients and staff, led me to a pivotal realization – I needed to position myself to educate and advocate for patients to access their Hospice benefits.

This journey prompted me to transition to working for a hospice agency, where I assumed a role that allowed me to educate others about hospice, facility placement, associated costs, service locations, and the intricacies of making these transitions possible. Along the way, I discovered a significant gap in knowledge among providers and families regarding accessing and setting up various types of care, the associated costs, and how to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system.

While my expertise initially centered around hospice care, I want to emphasize that my services are not limited to this specific realm. I am dedicated to addressing all different healthcare needs and levels of care for aging individuals. Over the years, I have worked with a wide range of family structures, medical situations, and patient/family needs, honing my expertise in developing comprehensive plans to navigate the healthcare system and prepare for unexpected requirements. Teaching about End-of-Life care and highlighting the benefits during such a critical time has been a source of fulfillment for me. I derive satisfaction from working with families to create plans they never thought possible because they didn't know what to expect. Providing relief to patients and families who believed nursing homes were their only option due to perceived inability to provide necessary care is a gratifying aspect of my work.

I eagerly anticipate assisting many more families in understanding the complexities of placing their loved ones, whether it's in their homes or healthcare facilities. Every challenge is a welcome opportunity for me, as I firmly believe that no obstacle is too difficult to overcome. I am committed to guiding individuals and families based on their unique circumstances, wishes, and resources, ensuring that the decisions made align with their best interests.
