Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
I have served Veterans as a clinical pharmacist for over 20 years and have been serving my family and friends to navigate the complex healthcare system for just as long. While I served as a patient care clinical pharmacist for the beginning of my career, I have spent most of my career focused on patient safety, medication safety, and strengthening systems and processes to reduce preventable medical errors and achieve zero Veteran harm.

The earliest experience I have as a patient advocate came less than 6 months after our wedding, when my husband, a nurse practitioner, underwent what was supposed to be a relatively minor surgery that turned into a 9 week hospitalization, resulting in numerous surgeries, chest tubes, an ICU stay, cardiac surgery, emergency medical transport, preventable medical errors, and countless complications. While pharmacy school had taught me how to handle the medical side of patient care, nothing had prepared me about the patient side like this experience.

I have seen firsthand the importance of an extra pair of knowledgeable eyes on care through my own experiences as a patient, the most memorable of which was when a trip to the emergency room for abdominal pain turned into major surgery to remove my spleen, gallbladder, and half of my pancreas due to two pre-cancerous lesions that were found on my pancreas, at the age of 32. One surgery became four and one admission turned in to five hospital stays over 6 months. Despite my own extensive medical training, it was only through my husband's advocacy at my bedside that I successfully left that experience behind in the rearview mirror.

One of the most impactful and meaningful experiences I have had was spending over 6 months at my dad's side, before, during, and after his lung transplant, from pre-transplant testing to successful transplant to post-transplant complications to holding his hand as he took his last earthly breath. Being able to relieve my mom, his caregiver, of some of the burden, was essential to her physical, mental, and emotional health.

I have partnered with my husband, who has spent time as a patient and in his nearly 30 years of professional experience, knows how confusing and challenging healthcare can be and has a passion for helping others navigate their healthcare journey.

Together, we provide over 45 years of combined experience in various aspects of the healthcare system. Our mission is to empower individuals and families to navigate the complex healthcare landscape with confidence and ease. We are dedicated to ensuring that every individual receives the highest quality of care and support they deserve, regardless of their background or circumstances.
