Why I Became A Professional Health Care Advocate
My background as a hospice clinical director and workers comp case manager gave me the opportunity to work with a diverse set of patients and challenges requiring creative solutions! One thing I learned is that “no” is never an answer. One of my first patients, who is now in her 70s, fell while out of the country on vacation and returned in excruciating pain. She called to make an appointment with her doctor and was told she would have to wait 4 months. She expected that her only option was to accept this answer, but she called me anyway to let me know. The first thing I did was get her permission to start making calls to see if I can get her seen sooner, she agreed. I’ll shorten the story that took place behind the scenes, but basically, she was seen that same week by an orthopedic surgeon with her insurance and within one month, she had completed x-rays and an MRI, several sessions of PT, a corticosteroid injection, and was already reporting 75% relief from her pain. Had she not had an advocate, she might still be struggling through the pain with ibuprofen and waiting to see her primary clinic provider. You can read the testimonial through her words on my website, entitled “The privilege to have patient advocate.”
