Why I Became a Professional Health Care Advocate
I am passionate about improving access to care, and I went into nursing as a second career for that reason. My experience working in a hospital opened my eyes to the need for every patient to have an advocate at the bedside. When I worked for an insurance company as a Case Manager, it was my job to help coordinate care and make sure patients leaving the hospital got what they needed to recover well. I helped patients and family members navigate the system every day, and realized how difficult it is for people—especially older people who are not well, on top of having poor vision and difficulty hearting — to do that on their own. At the same time, I was caring for my aging mother as well as my mother-in-law, who had Alzheimer’s disease and was living with us. I really gained an understanding of those end-of-life challenges, and felt I could do a lot more to help families understand how to prepare for that, cope with it, and navigate through it. My job as a Registered Nurse and Case Manager was very rewarding, but I was limited by how much I could help because I worked for the insurance company, not the patient. I wanted to continue to deliver that kind of care, but felt I could achieve better outcomes by working directly with patients or their caregivers to ensure those in need receive the care and services they need for a better quality of life.
